Clinton Corners - Shirley Knowlton, 85, of Clinton Corners, NY and formerly of Poughkeepsie passed away on March 14, 2013 at River Valley Care Center. She was born on June 8, 1927 in New Paltz, NY to the late Chauncey Markle and Elizabeth(Lawrence)Markle.
She attended New Paltz Schools and worked as a waitress for Acropolis Diner (formally Brighton Diner) for 25 years and Good and Plenty Cafe for 2 years, retiring in 1994. She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Poughkeepsie, NY. Shirley was a loving, caring and devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmother and a friend.
Survivors include a son, William Knowlton and wife Margaret of Tuscon AZ, two daughters Cynthia Knowlton of Phoenix AZ, and Deborah Pitcher and husband James of Clinton Corners, NY. Four beloved grand children, Wayne Decker and wife Terri of Poughkeepsie, Stacey Schmouth and her fiance Michael Van Pelt of Highland, NY., Cynthia Akers and husband Gary of NC., and William Knowlton Jr. of NC. Eight Great-Grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by seven brothers, two sisters, her great grandson Matthew Decker, and long time friend and companion Llewelyn DeLease. A memorial service will be held Thursday, March 21, 2013, 11am at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 161 Mansion Street, Poughkeepsie, NY with Rev. Tyler Jones officiating. Burial at a later date will be in Crum Elbow Cemetery. The family requests memorial donations be made to the American Heart Association or St. Paul's Church.
